Our Story
Hello! I am Idah or Mai Lara, the owner and baker at Mai Lara's bouqcakes. I have been living in Madison WI for about 10 years. I am originally from Zimbabwe. I am a Software Engineer by profession and I love DIY projects and hobbies. Mai Lara means Lara's mom in Shona, the main native language spoken in Zimbabwe. Back in Zimbabwe if you are a mom you are always referred to as so and so's mom so I wanted to include that part of my culture into my business! Bouqcakes comes from the bouquet of cupcakes which is my main product. So, the full name of my business means Lara's mom's Bouqcakes and Bakes!
I started this home baking business initially as a hobby right after I had my daughter Lara(short for Omolara a Yoruba name). As a new mom in a foreign country, I was strugglingwith postpartum blues and so I decided to look for a new hobby. I have always loved baking and some of my fondest memories of my late mom are from when she taught me how to bake. I always baked birthday cakes for my friends and family. The first time I made floral cupcakes, my family and friends said I should start a business! After doing it a few more times, I decided to start Mai Lara's Bouqcakes and Bakes! Designing and decorating cupcakes and cakes has turned into a passion for me and I am happy to share it with all of you! I hand pipe all the flowers and I make all my baked goods fresh with no preservatives.
